Male nurses are far from an anomaly in a health-care setting in 2015. The Peter Munk Cardiac Centre is home to over 130 nurses, 20 of whom are male. While pursuing a career in nursing may not be top of mind for many men, those males who have followed through remain a minority who have no regrets. Steve Walthers is one of them.

Most male nurses are faced with various challenges because female nurses feel that they are likely to show signs of resistance in case where mistakes arise. Generally, the experience of male nurse as minority group seems to be that of being faced with lack of social approval, acceptance and adequate role models starting from nursing school.

In the 20 th Century specifically during Florence Nightingale’s time, nursing was considered a woman-only occupation were men were strongly vilified and perceived as being incapable of offering any caring services simply because of they had ‘horny’ hands that were considered unfavorable to care offer thus prompting their exclusion from the profession of nursing (Kippenbrock, 2010). Honestly, there seem to be more pros than cons when it comes to this profession. Being a male nurse has nearly all the benefits being a female nurse affords, plus a couple more. And men are finally beginning to recognize that. Today, over 13% of nurses are men, and the numbers of male nurses are growing. Men are finally beginning to realize that nursing is a respectable, worthwhile and fulfilling profession for anyone!
